Track Update #6 (April 13)

Darts -
Now that spring break is over and we are back in school, it is time to put one final push toward the championship part of our season. I think of our "championship" season as the Davis Invite, BYU Invite, the Region Championships, and the State Championships. This is by far the best part of the year, and I am excited to see what you can do. I think that so many of you have put in so much hard work over the indoor and outdoor seasons, and now is the time to enjoy the competition and see what you can do to end the season. Be excited for it. Bring a lot of energy and enthusiasm for these final meets. Be excited for your teammates, and expect yourself to do great things. Believe in yourself and have the confidence that you can hit your goals. Keep everything positive and intense. I will work on doing the same - I know I tend to get frustrated at certain things, and I am setting the goal to keep myself in my most positive mood over the last 5 weeks.

Arcadia Invite - we took a small group of Davis athletes to compete in the Arcadia Invitational in California (biggest high school track meet in the country). Our kids performed really well. It was a fun trip, and I hope that some of you sophomores and juniors will work hard so we can go back again next year. The performance of the meet for us was Candace Eddy's 2nd place run in the Invitational Mile. She put a great move in with about 300m to go, but was caught just before the finish. To finish top 3 at Arcadia for 3 years is a huge accomplishment. Her time was 4:55. Seth Gutzwiller also had a solid run in the 3200m race. He ran an 11 second pr to finish in 9:25 (our #3 all-time mark). Meghan Hedquist also had a #3 all-time mark with her 11:11 3200m run. It was a 16 second pr for Meghan. Devin Lang ran a 2 second pr in the 800 to finish with a strong 1:57.7. Tony Hill just missed finals in the shot put with a throw of 53'10 (but he would have made the finals in the sprints if he was running away from someone tickling him). Julianne ran a pr and an all-time mark in the 3200 with an 11:26 and she beat the girl who swore at her. The relays were really exciting for the TEAM. On Friday night we had a boys 4 x 1 mile and a girls 4 x 1 mile. For the boys, Curtis ran a 4:36 (pr), Jeff ran a solid 4:46, Leland ran a pr 4:43, and Logan finished it off with a 4:40. For the girls, we ran a school record averaging 5:21 per mile - Talya ran 5:21 (pr), Jessie followed that with a 5:21 (pr), Katie ran 5:26, and Meghan finished with a killer 5:16 (pr). On Saturday night we had some more fun with the distance medley relay (1200 - 400 - 800 - 1600). Curtis ran a 3:17 (4:24 pace), Devin cranked out a 53.0 400, Leland ran a pr 2:02, and Seth finished in 4:29. On the girls side, Talya ran a 3:51 (5:09 pace), Dani Figgins ran a stellar 58.3 (pr), Jessie ran a gutsy 2:23 (starting with an excited 64 - she had to dig really deep on the 2nd lap), and Candace finished it off with a 5:03 - just 2 hours after her other mile. A quick thanks to the parents who drove a bunch and came to help me out with the trip (Steve, Becky, Suzanne, Jill, and Kim).

Athletes of the Week:
Candace Eddy
Seth Gutzwiller

Coming up:
Davis @ Northridge - Wednesday, April 15th - we will be holding the meet at Northridge at 3:00pm - not at Davis in the evening as we planned. The weather may be rough, so prepare yourselves for that. Hopefully it is our last poor weather meet - but either way, we will continue to compete and have fun.

Taylorsville Invite - Saturday, April 18th - The bus will leave the school at 7:00am. Our entries will be posted on Wednesday before we leave for the Northridge meet.

Davis Invite - Saturday, April 25th - As if I haven't said it enough, this is the big one for us each year. It is important that we put on a good meet. If you are going to miss at any point during the day, I need to know beforehand in writing. A lot of our success for the year is based on how we pull off the Davis Invite.
*Davis Invite Sponsors - we are still looking for some event sponsors for the Davis Invite - it costs $100 to sponsor an event - which includes getting your name on the back of the t-shirt, getting your name published in the program, and getting it announced when the event is being contested. Events are usually sponsored by a family or a business. Thanks to those who have put some work into getting some sponsors and for those who have already sponsored an event. Let me know if you have any questions on this.

T-shirts/warmups - Will be in tomorrow morning (Tuesday). If you have paid in the office you can pick up your warmups ($65) and/or t-shirts ($5) from me or Coach West.

Never Back Down - Never Give Up.
Let's make it fun to the finish of the season.
