Davis Track & Field Update
April 14, 2008
The TEAM finished one of our busiest weeks of the season as far as competition goes. We saw a lot of improvement and some really gutsy performances. It would be difficult to highlight everything with how well the TEAM is competing – but we are definitely moving in the right direction as we approach the biggest meets of the season.
DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIPS
Boys and Girls both brought home the trophies. Boys TEAM score = 1. Davis 256, 2. Viewmont 111, 3. Woods Cross 93
Girls TEAM score = 1. Davis 211.5, 2. Viewmont 111, 3. Woods Cross 91
Ryan Avery was the boys athlete of the meet with four 1st place finishes (100, 200, HJ, 4 x 100). Bryce Hall had the performance of the meet with his throw of 165’08 in the discus. We scored points in every single event both boys and girls.
UHSTCA CHAMPIONSHIPS
Although we were extremely short-handed, some of the Davis athletes represented us well at the Coaches Meet at Syracuse: Talya Kussee had a big day finishing 3rd in the 1600 (5:24.50), and 4th in the 800 (2:28.8). Dan Willoughby ran 51.28 in the 400. Brittany Sumsion ran 63.27 in the 400, showing she is coming right along in her recovery. Kyler Sprague ran tough in the 110 Hurdles (16.56) and the 300 Hurdles (41.90). Kyle Burk finished 2nd in the shot put (45’02.50). Tandin Chapman continued to tear it up in the Javelin throwing 160’07 (2nd). Matt Daley qualified for state in the high jump (6’02). The girls TEAM finished 2nd and the boys finished 5th.
ARCADIA INVITATIONAL
A smaller group of Davis athletes traveled to Arcadia, CA for some national level competition. It was a highly successful trip: Bryce Hall finished 1st in the Invitational Shot Put (61’01), he was just the 3rd Davis athlete to ever win an event at Arcadia. Natalie Haws finished 7th in the 3200 with the 4th fastest time in Utah history (10:32.98). Candace Eddy finished 2nd in the mile (4:55.98). The girls Distance Medley Relay team finished 2nd (12:08.79) with great individual splits as well. Spencer Anderson ran a huge PR in the mile (4:26) to finish 2nd in his heat. Seth Gutzwiller made it on to the all-time board with his #5 ever 9:37. Loren Storey ran a great PR in the mile (5:14) and Katie Swanson also ran her all-time best (5:17) both times made the Davis top 10. Julianne Wirthlin (11:28) and Emily Hansen (11:44) both ran PRs in the 3200. Shaun Webb came home with two 4th place finishes in his hurdle races (15.25/40.10). Jordan Stuart just missed at his PR in the pole vault, but still cleared 13’01. And the boys Distance Medley team had some great splits, lead by 2:01.7 by Ryan Thomas in the 800, and 4:36 by Seth in the 1600.
ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Chosen as Athletes of the Week were Seth Gutzwiller, Tandin Chapman, Talya Kussee, and Loren Storey.
