Darts -
It has been a great first week of workouts. Coach West and I are pleased with those who have shown commitment and dedication to the TEAM and to improvement. There are many of you who still need to work on this, but we as coaches have decided to focus on the positive and move forward with those who want to be here and want to be doing what is best for the TEAM.
One of my favorite workouts every year is the 5 x 200 relay we ran on Wednesday with the sprinters and Thursday with the distance runners. Although it was a bit windy and cold, I thought you each brought a lot of energy and excitement to the relay. This is the first year I am starting to keep track of records, so we set records on the girls' and the boys' sides. The girls fastest team of five ran 14:00 for the overall 5000m (you'll have to check with Coach West for who was on the team). On the boys side, Eric Johnson, Jon Ferguson, Austin Facer, Kye Kunz, and Benson Richards set the record at 12:22 on Wednesday, but the distance runner team of Seth Gutzwiller, Devin Lang, Curtis Carlisle, Logan Petty, and Leland Stenquist broke the record on Thursday running 11:51. If we have another chance to run the relay this year, we will put the 2 teams head to head. If not, we will go after those records next year.
I was also pleased with the efforts and the marks in the 300m time trials and the throwing trials on Friday in the 35 degree weather. On the girls side we had 6 or 7 girls run faster than our fastest mark last year (44 seconds by Missy) and we had many new girls run even faster than we had hoped - we are showing a lot of promise with our girl sprinters this year. On the boys side we were close to the depth we had last year which is a very good sign. Last year, in one of our best years ever for the time trial, we had 6 boys under 38, this year we had 6 boys under 39, and quite a few close to breaking 40. The big surprise came from senior Luke Thompson who just started running with us this week and ran a 38 in the time trial. Overall we had a lot of improvement from last year and it gets us excited to see what we can do in the meets. In the throwing events we were led by Tony Hill (52' in the shot put), Luke Allred (140' in the discus), and sophomore Bridger Parkin (136' in the Javelin). We have a lot of young throwers who are starting with solid marks and have a great chance to improve with some hard work.
I will continue to urge each of you to be patient during these early weeks of practice. Improvement and success takes time and hard work. Don't get frustrated with your events - just do your best and continue to bring positive attitudes to practice.
Seniors, you are doing a great job leading your TEAM - keep up the good work. Look for opportunities to be examples and to help the new athletes learn their events and learn the Davis tradition of excellence.
Important Items:
Voting for TEAM Captains - will take place on Wednesday after school. We will also announce the class captains for the intersquad/alumni meet.
Warmups - If you would like to order the black warmups that we used last year, you can sign up during practice. They will be the same style as last year. They will cost $65 for a set ($35 for jackets and $30 for pants if you want to buy either of them separately). You will have until Monday the 16th to sign up and will have about 2 weeks to pay for the warmups.
Eligibility - must be done ASAP. You need to fill out your forms, pay $60 in the office, and bring the forms and receipts to me or Coach West. Please help us get this done quickly.
Alumni/Intersquad Meet - will be on Friday, March 13th beginning at 3:00pm. We will score the meet - Seniors vs. Juniors (x 1.5) vs. Sophomores (x 2.0). It is a great meet to get a beginning mark and to try some new events. We will be talking about what to expect all week long. Hopefully some famous alumni will show up to compete with us. For last years results go to:
Girls - http://darttrack.blogspot.com/2008/03/alumniintrasquad-girls-results.html
Boys - http://darttrack.blogspot.com/2008/03/alumniintrasquad-results.html
Uniforms - will be handed out at Saturday practice - 9:00am on Saturday the 14th. You will only receive a uniform if your eligibility is completed. Those who showed up for Saturday practice today (March 7th) were rewarded with free "banana suit" warmups - and will be looking sweet all season long. Coach Buhrley told me that some of those were over 20 years old - that's vintage stuff.
