We had some great marks at the BYU Invitational this past weekend. We saw some PRs, some season bests, some Davis All-Time top 10 marks, and some last minute state qualifying marks. Although we were limited on the number of entries, it was a solid way to wrap up our invitational season heading into the championship meets (region and state).
Both the boys and the girls were BYU Invitational Champions (3A-5A) for the 3rd year in a row. It was the boys 7th or 8th straight BYU victory. The girls scored a ton of their points in the pole vault and the relays. We picked up 28 points in the pole vault, led by a 1-2-3 sweep from Liz Jones, Paige Erickson, and Ashley Sullenger. The 3 relays scored us 22 points with a first place in the 4 x 400, 2nd in the medley, and 5th in the 4 x 100. We also picked up solid points from the 300 Hurdles with Jordan Barnett finishing second in a PR of 45.00 and Ruby Jane Mathewson placing 3rd with 45.19. Our other scorers included Aubrey Argyle - 2nd in the 3200, Melanie Sullivan - 4th in the 400m, Courtney Wayment - 6th in the 3200m, and Olivia Richards with 7th in the 100m hurdles. The girls scored 82 points and more than doubled 2nd place: 2) Maple Mountain 39; 3) Sky View 35; 4) Desert Hills 33; 5) Salem Hills 32.5. It was one of the first times this season where our girls scored more points than our boys (82-75).
The boys also picked up the victory with only 2 first place finishes - Matt Calvin with 13'10 in the pole vault and Palmer Flood with a PR in the 300m hurdles. We scored our points from a lot of different places on the boys side - we have had a very well-balanced attack. Dallin Baires finished 2nd in the discus and 3rd in the shot put; Nate Allred and Hunter Simonsen finished 3rd and 5th in the high jump - Hunter was also 3rd in the long jump; Brigham Valentine was 4th in the pole vault; our boys medley finished 4th and the 4 x 400 finished 7th; Jaron Erickson was 3rd in the 110 hurdles and 6th in the 300 hurdles; Palmer added a 6th in the 110 hurdles; and Colter Blanchard picked up 8th place in the 800m run. We will be looking to score in every event at the state meet (all 17 events). At the end of the day we edged Orem for the victory: 1) Davis 75; 2) Orem 64; 3) Desert Hills 45; 4) American Fork 43; 5) Sky View 41.
Maybe my favorite statistic of all is the final combined scores (boys and girls) for 3A-5A schools (more than 70 schools represented) -
1. Davis 157
2. Orem 96
3. Desert Hills 78
4. Sky View 76
5. Lone Peak 61
The final 2 weeks of the season are going to require very high focus, energy, excitement, and unity. We have got to continue to come together and to do our best to prepare for region and state. The hard work is mostly done at this point - now it is all about preparing mentally and physically to perform at our max. Those of you who are competing, put your whole heart and mind into doing your best and racing/jumping/throwing for your TEAM. Those of you who are not qualified for region and/or state - please continue to bring energy to your TEAM - show up to those meets and cheer on your teammates and provide them with the strength, encouragement, and motivation they will need - you CAN make a major difference. I hope that ALL of you will continue to contribute in any way that you can - and I hope that ALL of you will still feel like you are part of the accomplishments that we have as a TEAM in these final championship meets. We say it every single day - now it is time to mean it: "All for One, One for All, All for Davis High" - put your TEAM first these two weeks and this TEAM will be what it needs to be. These final two meets are all about the TEAM! This is the home stretch - compete with passion and purpose!
Region Championships - Wednesday & Thursday (May 6-7): The schedule and tentative entries are attached to this email. These are not final. There is a region seeding meeting on Monday night where we finalize the entries. I will get as many of you in as possible. The list reflects what I think we will be able to get into the region meet (it is based on your region ranking in your event).
You will be excused both days at 1:15 - we will return around 6:30pm on Wednesday and 7:00pm Thursday. I would like everyone there until the end on Thursday (TEAM Picture will be taken).
You can still qualify for state at the region meet by finishing in the top 4 in your event or by hitting the region qualifying standard.
Friday, May 8th - We are hosting our last junior high meet (North End) - we will need your help from 1:00-5:30 (it is a class day).
Tuesday, May 12th - Sophomore Region - For all sophomores, and juniors and seniors who did not qualify for region. Host school has not yet been determined.
State Championships - Friday-Saturday, May 15-16 @ BYU - Everyone is invited and encouraged to come both days. We will have 3 buses. More details to come.
