Darts -
Despite the snow and cold weather, it was a great first week of "outdoor" track. I am excited to have so many of you on the TEAM and to see so many new faces. I hope that you are ready for one of the best track seasons in Davis history. We are truly going to do some amazing things this season. We will be fighting for another district, region, and state championship for both the boys and the girls, but more importantly, we will be testing your character as individuals and your unity as a TEAM. I hope to see all of you striving for PRs and striving to be your very best in all that we do - from workouts to leadership to performances to schoolwork. Thanks for bringing such positive attitudes this past week. As it gets warmer, things get even better. This next week we will be outside a lot more - and possibly already working on our spring tans. We will definitely be working hard on our fitness and readiness for our first few meets. If there is one thing that I felt we could work on after the first week, it is attendance. Many of you made it to all 5 days of practice - if you didn't - then try harder this next week to be at practice all week and to continue to be committed to being your best and to giving your best for the TEAM. I am really excited to see what we can do if we all come together and give our best.
Eligibility - Please turn in your eligibility papers on Monday or Tuesday (March 5-6). The papers include a physical form (A or B) and some papers you need to sign. Return the papers and your receipt with the participation fee ($85) to Coach Talley. We need to turn in our eligibility information to the state on Wednesday. Make the checks out to Davis High School and pay in the main office. We don't have school on Tuesday, but the office will still be open.
Apparel - If you are interested in getting the warm-ups or a t-shirt, please sign up on the clipboard by Wednesday. The warm-ups are $65 for a set (35 for the jacket and 30 for the pants) and an extra $5 if you decide to stitch your name into the jacket sleeve. There are a few sizes that I will have at practice on Mon-Wed if you are not sure what size to get. The t-shirts are $10.
Tuesday Practice - Even though we don't have normal school on Tuesday, we will still have practice. We will meet on the outdoor track at 1:30 in the afternoon. It will be a very critical day. Sprinters will be working on the block starts for the first time. High Jumpers and Pole Vaulters will be able to use the pits for just the 2nd day. Distance runners will be going on a distance run and ending with some strides. Throwers will be able to work outside for the last time before measuring on Wednesday. Tuesday will be worth double letter points.
Time Trial - Wednesday will be your first test. Sprinters/Hurdlers/Jumpers will all be timed in the 100m Dash (out of blocks) and the 300m Dash (Blocks optional). Distance runners will be timed for a 1200m (giving us a good indication of your 800 and 1600 times). This is the first year of the time trials - but we will be keeping track of the times and keeping a "top 10" list for the time trials in the future. Throwers will be measuring for the first time on Wednesday. Parents are welcome to come and watch. We will be starting at about 2:00 with the members of the class and continuing until about 4:00 with those who are after school.
Alumni Meet - Our first official track meet is on Friday, March 16th. It is a meet with our TEAM and as many alumni as we can convince to come back and race with us. If you know any alumni, please talk a little trash and try to motivate them to come and see what they can do against our current athletes. The meet will be scored with 4 teams - Alumni, Seniors, Juniors, and Sophomore/Freshmen - girls and boys scores will be combined together. This is a mandatory meet if you want to participate in the Super Meet the following week.
Track Meets - as you have noticed on the schedule, most of the track meets are on Wednesdays and Saturdays (the 2 day meets are often on Tues-Weds or Fri-Sat). All of you will be able to participate in most of the meets. There are some meets where you will have to qualify to compete (District, Coaches Meet, Davis Invite, BYU, Region, State). To qualify for region, you have to be in the top 25 in the region in your event. To qualify for state, you have to meet the state qualifying standards or finish top 4 in the event at the region meet. The state standards can be found at http://www.uhsaa.org/btrack/2012/StateQualifyingStandards.pdf (we are in the 5A division) and they are also posted in the hallway with our other track information.
Shoes - It is very important that you have a good pair of workout shoes. Having a good pair of shoes will greatly reduce injury. It is also encouraged that you get a pair of competition shoes (spikes/throwing shoes). There are a few different options: Striders on Hillfield Road in Layton has a great selection of training shoes and racing spikes for sprints, hurdles, and distance. Online you can often find some great deals at www.eastbay.com Please ask a coach if you have any questions. If you are going to get spikes, make sure that you get the right kind for your event.
Information - I have attached the flier with the original information that I handed out at the opening meeting. Please let me know if there is still anything you are not clear about.
See you on Monday. We will be pulling out all of the jumping pits and the hurdles. It is supposed to be a nice week - let's plan on getting in a lot of high quality work this week.
Thanks,
Coach Talley
