Yesterday was such an incredible day-one we will celebrate and remember for a long time. I thought we had such a great TEAM effort in pulling off both of the wins. Not just in the people who ran, but also in the incredible support and cheering from all members of the team (and alumni and parents).
The girls competed like they have all year long. We knew we were strong and deep and we led from the gun. I thought we ran really close to our plan, and we pushed hard on the important points of the course. It was amazing to bring home the first ever Davis girls state cross country championship, but what is even more impressive are the hours of hard work, team work, and sacrifice that it took to get to this point. The girls ran the 4th fastest team time in the 10 year history of the course (from any division) and the fastest team time since 2000.

Natalie stayed patient throughout the entire race. She ran a lot of it with a smile on her face. When I saw her on the back side of the course (before the 2 mile mark) I yelled to stay patient - she was running right behind Shayla and they had pulled a way from the rest of the group. Natalie gave me a smile, and then she growled (weird, I know, but that is her style). I knew she was determined to finish strong. When it came down to the last ½ mile she was probably 5 seconds behind last year's state champion (Shayla Kipp from Skyline) but Natalie somehow dug deep and found some kind of monster kick on the track to capture the first ever Davis individual state championship (for either a boy or a girl). Natalie's time was the 14th fastest ever run on the course. The pictures in all 3 newspapers perfectly capture Natalie's excitement. She really deserved the title.
Candace had a rough day with her asthma in the cold, but stayed positive and tough for the TEAM. Although she had some tears after the race, a lot of them were out of joy for her teammates (especially Natalie for getting what she has worked so hard for). Candace was able to look accross the track and see Natalie fighting for 1st place. The 2 of them have done so much for each other that they really can share in each other's successes. They are the strongest 1-2 punch in the state (and have been for the past 3 years).
Emily knew coming into the race she would have a shot at top 10, but she would have to have one of her best races. She did just that. She went out aggressive and held her position. A great feat for her to be all-state as a sophomore. She has really stepped it up in the absence of Katie. Emily's time of 19:18 makes her the 5th fastest Davis girl to ever run the course (Natalie and Candace are 1-2).
Loren stayed tough throughout the entire race and really moved up in the final mile to finish 17th. It is amazing how far she has come in her first year of being a distance runner. She stayed really positive throughout the race.
Meghan has amazed us all with her ability and drive this season. She found Loren about 1 mile into the race and stuck right with her. The two of them worked their way up from about 35th to 20th. Watching Meghan finish the race you could tell that she had left it all on the course - what a gutsy race from a young runner. We could be pretty dang good again next year.
Hollie and Kelsey have improved their times at state every year (Hollie for 3 years and Kelsey for 4). They provided us with experience and leadership and consistency. We counted their places at about 1/2 way through the race. They both moved up about 20 places in the 2nd half. Only 1 team finished with their #5 runner in front of Hollie and Kelsey.
The boys race was simply incredible. I told one reporter that it is rare to have a full TEAM (all 7) put together solid races all on the same day, but that is what we needed. We knew it would be a close race with American Fork, Alta, Skyline, and Bingham. I am not sure what was said on the starting line (I was up at the finish line with the girls), but whatever was said, the TEAM definitely looked focused and confident and were really into the race when I saw them after the first 1/2 mile. At 2 miles we were still a little behind AF, but looking like we had a good shot if we could stay strong in the final mile. Bryce, Jason, and Jordan each passed 7 or 8 guys in the last kilometer, and Seth and Spencer held their positions in the top 10. Other teams around them started to fade. By the time they were all through the finish chute we knew we had won, and the celebration began there at the finish line. It was a pretty thrilling experience.

I have to talk about Seth and Spencer in the same paragraph. The two of them have run and trained together over the past 2 cross country seasons. They have been consistent and have led the team in more ways than just their running. Neither of them are ever satisfied-they both have a drive to improve and be the best. For them both to finish in the top 7 was huge for us in this race.
Bryce was the stud of the day. He ran a patient smart race, and really came on the final mile. He was a little more conservative over the first 1/2 of the race, but came on like crazy-especially in the final mile. He did just what we needed him to do, and beat every other team's 3rd runners.
Jason and Jordan finished higher than any other team's 4th runner. They ran together through a lot of the race. The last time I saw them (with about 600 to go) I could tell they were both going to finish strong and that we were close to winning it. I think the people around me thought I was crazy, but I kept yelling "We're going to win! We're going to win!" to Jordan and Jason.
Michael and Carston stepped up at the end of the season and earned their spots at state. They did their job well as only 3 teams had their #5 in front of our 6 & 7. Both of them ran like experienced runners even though this was the first big varsity race for either of them. We are looking strong for next year with 5 of our top 8 runners returning.
Once again, a special thanks to all parents and supporters of the TEAM. You have helped to make this season fun, memorable, and successful. We couldn't have accomplished this state championship without your help.
As Hollie put it today: "Life goes on after a state championship". We will savor the moment and the victories, but we also have many great things to look forward to.

I just wanted to thank each of you and many of your parents for making the Region Championships such a success for our TEAM. Thanks to the parents for the support and for the goodies at the races. I thought we did an outstanding job in each of the 4 races. I was pleased with your enthusiasm, your unity, and your individual efforts. The JV girls ended their perfect season (8 straight wins) with a perfect score (15). Our depth has been one of our greatest strengths this year, and it really showed in this race. Brittany pulled away in the second half of the race to get the win. It was a team record for the most Davis girls under 22:00 (14) and under 23:00 (19). I was really proud of the seniors in their last cross country race. Good job Ally, Morgan, and Erica.

The varsity girls continued to dominate. Natalie and Candace ran together through the entire race to finish where they did last year (1-2). It was a demonstration of teamwork and unselfishness as they worked together and finished together. These 2 have been great leaders for our TEAM over the past 3 years, and it is going to be tough without Natalie. Emily finished with the #6 time ever run by a sophomore, and Meghan’s time was the #4 time ever run by a freshman. Our 3 “white shirts” all had great races, led by Julianne’s 19:36, showing she is back to form after the injury. We are definitely ready for the state meet this Wednesday.

We ran smart and finished strong in the boys JV race to come out on top. Colin and Caleb led the team with top 3 finishes. Logan and Garrett fought hard through the race to finish in the top 10. And Jake and Cody came on strong over the last ½ of the race to finish 10th and 12th. With all but Jake coming back next year, we have a solid foundation for the TEAM. Congrats to all the seniors in the race - Jake, Dan, Ryan, and Josh.

The varsity boys finished off the day with their 12th straight region title. The most impressive thing about this race was the finish of our 3 through 7 guys being so close together. They have developed a solid pack over the last few races. Spencer and Seth ran side by side helping each other out on their way to a 2-3 finish. If we put together a solid race this next week, we will be in the hunt for a trophy.

In the place of the Footlocker trip, the TEAM has been invited to compete in the Nike Regional Meet with a chance to qualify for the National Championships (in Portland on Dec. 1st). The cost of the trip will be about $200 (some of which could be offset through the fundraiser). I would like as many members of the TEAM to come as possible. We could make this as fun and memorable as the Footlocker trip, with more of an emphasis on the TEAM’s performance. I will be sending more information home with the athletes asap. As we go into this final race of the season, remember that no matter what happens, you are champions. You have sacrificed and worked hard to get to where you are. You have been committed to each other and to achieving greatness together. Our objective is simple: to run the best we can. Let’s go away from the state meet satisfied that we gave our all. Also remember that so much of the joy we should experience at the end of a season comes from the journey. I think we have learned a lot on the way. We have had our struggles and our challenges, but they have made us better and we have overcome them, and for a small moment of your lives (15 to 20 minutes) on Wednesday, we are going to shine.

XC Update - Bob Firman
Darts,
I hope that you are recovering from the Bob Firman trip. It was a great experience for our TEAM, but also right in the middle of the season. We still have many great things to come over the next 3 ½ weeks. We still have a lot of work to do to be ready to race our best at region and state. I hope that each of you are learning from your races, and finding things to help you better prepare for the last races of the season.
The boys team raced well against some major competition. 9 teams in the meet were nationally or regionally ranked. We are showing greater depth in our 3-7 runners, but we still need to close the gap between Seth and Spencer and the rest of the TEAM. Most importantly, we are still improving and still running PRs.

The JV boys are developing more and more depth. The top 7 JV boys are all coming back next year. I thought that Caleb ran a particularly gutsy race. I was also very pleased with how Colin, Garrett, and Michael worked together over the 2nd half of the race.

It has kind of been a bitter-sweet week for our girls varsity TEAM. We found out on Friday that we are nationally ranked (in the top 25) for the first time ever. The girls are ranked 23rd by the Harrier magazine. There is a link to the rankings on dyestat.com. We followed up the ranking with an impressive performance in the Bob Firman race. We finished 2nd to Mountain Brook, Alabama (ranked 21st nationally). All of the girls ran solid, and we had many personal bests. The bitter part is the news I received today about Katie Swanson. Katie has been our big surprise of the season. She has been our #3 runner at every race, and has been running close to Candace and Natalie. She is currently one of the top 10 5A runners in the state in her first year of cross country. Her lower leg had been bothering her coming into the race, and it really hurt during the race. An x-ray today showed that she has broken her leg and will be in a boot for 4 to 6 weeks. Most likely we are going to be without Katie the rest of the season. It is a big loss to the TEAM. She runs with determination and guts; she is an awesome runner and a great leader. We can still accomplish our goal of state champions, but it means other members of the TEAM have to step it up.

The girls JV team dominated the race, which shows that our future is looking bright. Meghan Hedquist took off in the second lap of the race to distance the field and win by an impressive 26 seconds. She had been feeling sick the entire trip, but raced hard through the sickness. Julianne is coming back from an injury and looked strong as she fought for 2nd place. The team had 7 of the top 21 places to win by 68 points. Our biggest improvement from last year’s race was Brittany Sumsion, who ran 1:57 faster.

Darts,
It has been a very successful week for both the boys and the girls TEAMS. We started with Wednesday's Davis County Clipper victories at Layton Park. Davis won all 4 TEAM competitions (boys & girls varsity and JV). The JV girls had a standout performance taking the top 14 places. For results go to: darttrack.blogspot.com.
I wish I could have seen the BYU Invite races, I guess the text updates I got from Brad while I was running on top of some mountain will have to do. From the results it seems like we had some very solid performances in our first big invite of the year. Most of the top teams in the state were at the race.
The girls swept both the Varsity and JV TEAM titles. The varsity girls placed 7 in the top 19 (from 5A teams) and ended up winning by 100 points. Candace was the individual champion followed by Natalie in 4th. They have both been so consistent over the last 3 years as 2 of the states best runners. Staying consistent at that level is a huge accomplishment. Katie finished 12th and has really stepped up to help the team. Emily had a breakthrough race, improving 3:04 over last year. Loren is continuing to run strong with a 2:41 improvement over last year. And Kelsey and Hollie have also improved greatly (over 1:00 each) and have consistently helped the TEAM. There were also some great performances in the girls JV and 9th/10th grade races. The JV girls won by 9 points over the best team from Montana. Ashley Ballard-Sume was the individual champion, and some notable improvements over last year include: Talya (2:55), Lizzy (1:26), Megan (:59), Morgan (3:23), Missy (3:40), and Brittany (3:16). All the girls have been stepping it up and running better and better. The hard work has paid off. Keep up the positive attitudes and the passion for the TEAM.
The boys also ran very strong races. It may not be evident by the place (5th) compared to 2nd last year, but the boys Varsity team ran a faster team time this year (17:00 average for the top 5 compared to 17:08 in 2006). This year's team would have won the 2006 race. The 4A competition has improved and our boys finished 5th but were the #1 5A team in the meet. Seth came through with a huge race running 16:13 (only :07 off of Jared's time from last year). Spencer finished 14th overall (#4 in 5A). Bryce improved his time 2:11 over last year for a strong finish. Jason is improving consistently with every race. Bryson, who won the BYU jv race last year, still improved his time, and is going to run even faster. Jordan has been sick, but ran 1:04 faster than last year, and Leland has stepped it up to run varsity and showed that he belonged in that race. A very impressive race; we are starting to show that we are contenders, and the thing I like most about it is that we are capable of running even better. The boys JV team has come together nicely. The top 7 runners were within :53 seconds of each other. Good enough for a 3rd place finish in a tight battle (once again the top 5A team). We are improving with every race. Now, some of you may want to know about my 100 mile endurance race yesterday. Let me just start by saying thank you for the tremendous support and encouragement. I didn't have a pacer for the first 40 miles, but I had all of you in my thoughts. I was also getting text messages like crazy every time I would get service. It was annoying the other runners to hear my phone going off every few minutes. I think I counted 127 text messages during the run. They were so positive and really kept me going. I am sorry that I didn't respond to your questions - it is difficult to text and run on trails. Brad was sending me messages to update me on the BYU races. It was getting me so excited. In fact, during that stretch (from about 9:30 am to 11:30 am) I was running along a few different ridges, and I moved from about 12th place up to 5th place. It was also the fastest pace that I ran the entire race - because I could not hold back my excitement. Sometimes he would send me updates and I would raise my hands in the air and cheer. (don't worry, I was alone at the time - no one could see me). Thanks for running so well and motivating and inspiring me.
The race was incredible. I kept saying that I could not believe how good I felt and how positive I was thinking. My hip flexors started hurting about 12 miles into the race, but that was the only trouble I was having. I was able to eat and drink and stay hydrated. I came into the aid station feeling great at 39 miles and picked up my 1st pacer (Steve Petty), and was able to see Stef and Ashlyn for just a second, but it gave me a huge boost. Steve did a great job getting me to mile 53 at Lambs Canyon. Mile 53 was the highlight of my race. I can't describe how uplifting it was to see so many of you there. My parents (and about 20 other people who were at the scene) have told me how incredible my team is, and I absolutely agree. I left the aid station on an unbelievable high that kept me going the next 2 or 3 hours. My next 2 pacers (Kenneth and Mark - old college running buddies) were surprised that I was so upbeat and that I could keep moving so well. My knees and my hip flexors were still in a lot of pain, but it didn't seem to slow me down too much. It was not until nightfall (at about 70 miles) that I started to feel some major pain, I was also having difficulty eating and drinking. I made it to Brighton Ski resort (mile 75.6) at about 9:30. I knew that I was tired and hurting, but I also knew that I could finish. I was still in 5th place. Stefanie and my parents were there which gave me a huge boost. I grabbed some food, read about 20 inspiring text messages, and set out on the climb to 10,500 feet. I also picked up my last pacer, Jed, who had stepped up to pace me last minute.
It is difficult to write about the last part of the race. Right as we left Brighton I could feel that I was in trouble. We slowly walked up the trail to Lake Mary. It was a steep uphill, and I was really struggling to lift my legs. I also started having some difficult stomach problems. Jed and I had to stop a few times so that I could throw up. I would feel a little better for a while, but knew that I was losing valuable calories and electrolytes. Everything I ate, I immediately threw up. Okay - this is getting gross, so I will finish up quickly. It took me and Jed about 1 hour to hike 2 miles up the trail. We came to a point that I had to stop and sit down. My legs were cramping and I was shivering and getting a bit delirious. About 5 or 6 other runners had passed me during the hour. I laid down on a big flat rock and couldn't get up for about 30 minutes. Jed kept encouraging me, but my body was at its limit. Everytime I tried to stand up and keep going, my legs would cramp and I would start shaking uncontrollably. We finally decided to walk back down to Brighton. But even that 2 mile walk seemed more difficult than the 78 miles I had already traveled. My stride was about 6 inches wide because I couldn't lift my legs. I had to keep stopping because I couldn't lift my legs. There were 2 or 3 times where Jed put me on his back and carried me as far as he could. Eventually I was able to walk a little bit, but the hour down the mountain was one of the most difficult things I have ever done. It was made even more difficult because I kept passing runners that were continuing the race up the mountain, and they were all so sympathetic and encouraging. I wanted desperately to keep going, but there was nothing I could do. Jed and I covered about 4 miles together in just under 3 hours. My pacers were all incredible, and I felt bad that Jed had to struggle with me through the hard part. Steve, Kenneth, and Mark were the lucky ones. We had fun and I was doing well, but Jed had to endure the challenging parts with me. I covered a total of 80 miles and then officially dropped out. I feel like it was a physical decision, not a mental one.
People think I am crazy for trying and crazy for putting my body through something like that, but I am glad that I tried it and that I had the experience. I pushed my body and mind harder and farther than I ever had before. The most I had run before the race was 31 miles. It would have been nice to finish, but at the same time I know that I did my best. Thanks again for all of your support and encouragement and concern. I had the best fans of anybody in the race. I really am inspired by your sacrifices to make our TEAM what it is.

It has been a very successful week for both the boys and the girls TEAMS. We started with Wednesday's Davis County Clipper victories at Layton Park. Davis won all 4 TEAM competitions (boys & girls varsity and JV). The JV girls had a standout performance taking the top 14 places. For results go to: darttrack.blogspot.com.
I wish I could have seen the BYU Invite races, I guess the text updates I got from Brad while I was running on top of some mountain will have to do. From the results it seems like we had some very solid performances in our first big invite of the year. Most of the top teams in the state were at the race.
The girls swept both the Varsity and JV TEAM titles. The varsity girls placed 7 in the top 19 (from 5A teams) and ended up winning by 100 points. Candace was the individual champion followed by Natalie in 4th. They have both been so consistent over the last 3 years as 2 of the states best runners. Staying consistent at that level is a huge accomplishment. Katie finished 12th and has really stepped up to help the team. Emily had a breakthrough race, improving 3:04 over last year. Loren is continuing to run strong with a 2:41 improvement over last year. And Kelsey and Hollie have also improved greatly (over 1:00 each) and have consistently helped the TEAM. There were also some great performances in the girls JV and 9th/10th grade races. The JV girls won by 9 points over the best team from Montana.
