Dart Update - Region Champions!!

Darts -
It was another great week for Davis Track & Field. All of our hard work and TEAM work was very evident at the Region Championships at Syracuse on Thursday and Friday. There was an awful lot of BROWN & GOLD on the podium - and there were a ton of great marks, season bests, and lifetime PRs. Not only was I impressed with our performances, I was also very proud of all that our TEAM does and the way that we compete. We are champions in more ways than just the gaining the title. We also managed to make it through over 100 AP tests in the past week (I would assume most of which were with passing grades). I felt like we showed respect and sportsmanship to athletes from other teams - a great example of this was Palmer Flood giving a hug and a hand shake to the hurdler from Layton after their run-off. I felt like we also showed great support for our teammates - we had quite a few athletes who were willing to sacrifice their own region glory to allow their teammates/friends to qualify for state: Alex Hedquist in the boys 1600m, Kendall Sargent in the girls javelin, and many others who were willing to sit out of an event to allow their teammates the opportunity. And I thought that through any ups and downs that we faced in the 3 days (with the rain day included), Davis track athletes kept a positive attitude and stayed very strong and unified. I hope that you all take a moment to realize how great you have it - how special this TEAM is - and how blessed you are to have each other as teammates.

Both the boys and the girls won the Region Championships by exactly 101 points. The girls scored 229 to beat 2nd place Fremont (128), and the boys scored 258.5 to beat Syracuse (157.5). The boys have won 17 of the past 18 region titles, and the girls have won 16 in a row.
For the girls, we had 3 girls who won two individual titles each. Shea Martinez won the 1600 in 5:06 and the 800m in a region record 2:08. Bailey Carling won the 100m in a pr of 12.53 and the 200m in 25.95. And Jessica Richardson won the shot put in 37'11 and the discus in 127'11 (an 8 foot pr). We scored 75 points in the three distance races, and had very solid performances from Ellie Child (2nd in the 800m); Katie Frandsen, Josey Hedquist and Tiahna Cipriano - 5-6-7 in the 800m; Hannah Albrechtsen and Taylor Cox finished 2nd and 3rd in the 1600m; and Sierra Graham, Joanna Boyd, and Aimee Vance all 3 qualified for state in the 3200m with a 2-3-4 finish. Our girl sprinter and hurdlers had a great day with Christine Van Brocklin finishing 2nd in both the 100m hurdles and the 400m dash, Libby Fowler finishing 4th in the 100m hurdles and 2nd in the 300m hurdles, Tyra Colohan finishing 4th in the 300m hurdles to qualify for state, Karly Sprague finishing 6th in the 100m hurdles (qualifying for state by time), Rachel Anderson scoring in both the 100m and 200m, and Taylor Cox finishing 5th in the 400m. Our girls in the field events were strong - in addition to Jessica, Kaylee Brown scored in both the shot put (6th) and the discus (5th), sophomore Meghan David finished 5th in the shot put, Natalie Mecham qualified for state with 4th in the javelin, Tanisha Langston wrapped up a very strong region track career with 3rd in the high jump, and Camille Stringham finished 5th in the long jump. Our girls also won all 3 of the relays with very impressive times. The girls 4 x 100m team (Rachel Anderson, Elise Anderson, Sarah Beecher, and Bailey Carling) ran a season best of 49.51. The girls medley team (Natalie Dyer, Sadie Wells, Kami Dixon, and Hannah Albrechtsen) ran 4:19.68 for 1st. And our girls 4 x 400m ended the meet with a new meet record of 3:57.89. That team consisted of Taylor Cox, Ellie Child, Christine Van Brocklin, and Shea Martinez.
We also had a few individual region champions on the boys side. Our only multiple winner was Ben Bracken, who won the shot put in 55'03 and the discus in 152'00. Seth Fortin won the 100m dash for the 3rd year in a row with a time of 10.94. Trevor Leavitt won the 200m with a new pr of 22.07. Ryan Lee won the 800m with a PR of 1:56.37. Preston Johnson won the 1600m with 4:24.94. Josh Ward (just a sophomore) got the victory in the 3200m with 10:00. And Jordan Schraedel finished first in the pole vault with 12'06. Our boy distance runners really came through for us earning 35 points in the 800m, 28 points in the 1600m, and 32 points in the 3200m for a total of 95 out of 117 possible points in those 3 events. We have now qualified for a team record 22 distance events: 7 boys in 800m, 7 boys in the 1600m, and 8 boys in the 3200m. At region, Jackson Sagers, Brayden Cromar, Seth Thompson, and Alex Hedquist finished 2-3-4-7 in the 800m; Stokton Smith, Sam Haws, Alex Hedquist, and Brayden Cromar finished 3-4-5-6 in the 1600m, and Hayden Hansen, Stokton Smith, and Skylar Williams were 2-3-4 in the 3200m (all qualifying for state). We also scored some strong points in the sprints and hurdles with Marcus Daley and Trevor Leavitt finishing 3-4 in the 100m, Robert Thomas finishing 5th in the 400m, and Ammon Hanks taking 3rd in the 110m hurdles and 3rd in the 300m hurdles. In the field events, Sam Matina finished 2nd in the shot put and 6th in the discus, Jeff Whittaker was 2nd in the javelin and 5th in the shot put, Andrew Schwemmer and Marcus Daley were 2nd and 5th in the high jump - Andrew jumped a 4 inch pr of 6'05, and our pole vaulters scored 25 points. Finally, our relays scored 26 points - with a 3rd in the 4 x 100, 1st in the medley relay (Colton Chronister, Jordan Goldsberry, Robert Thomas, and Preston Johnson), and 1st in the 4 x 400m (Colton Chronister, Jackson Sagers, Seth Thompson, and Ryan Lee). It was a great way to end the meet, with wins in both the girls and the boys 4 x 400m.

It was truly two great days of track & field for the Davis Darts. We now have a total of 50 athletes qualified for 82 individual events at the state championships. We have set new records this year for both boys and girls and the total number of athletes qualifying for state. We also have all 6 relay teams in.
We still have some work and some preparation to do in the next week in order to be ready for the state championships. It is very important that each of you prepare the best you can both physically and mentally for one final battle. Anything can happen at the state meet, and we want to be prepared to do the best we can no matter what the circumstances. We will see ups and downs in the state championships - and it is important that we stay mentally strong and that we stay unified throughout the entire two day meet. We have worked for a long time for this final meet of the season (and final meet of some incredible senior careers). Most of all, let's do our best and have a great time. Let's represent Davis Track & Field as champions in every way.

Sophomore Region - We will be hosting sophomore region on Tuesday beginning at 3:15pm. All sophomores, and any juniors and seniors who did not qualify for state are able to compete at sophomore region. It looks to be warm weather and should be a great day to end the year with some PRs. I am very excited about the younger group of Davis athletes and the future of the program, and the sophomore region meet is a great way to show our strength for the future.
All athletes competing at state should plan on doing a workout on the track/field right after school on Tuesday.

State Championships - Friday and Saturday, May 17-18. On Monday, I will send out a schedule with all that we have competing. You can also find the state schedule and information at http://www.uhsaa.org/btrack/2013/Info-Sched.pdf Any Davis athletes who are not competing and would like to come and watch/cheer/support on Friday should sign up on Monday-Wednesday for the excuse list. We will have 2 buses going down both on Friday and Saturday (more information to come).

Uniforms - We will turn in uniforms on Thursday, May 23rd. It is an A-day. That should give you a chance to wash them before you turn them in (and take a few pictures in them if you would like). Please don't turn them in before or after - that one day will be the best day to turn them in. Thanks.

TEAM Banquet - Tentatively scheduled for Thursday, May 30th at 5:30pm. More details and a finalized date will be announced after the state meet.

Cross Country Meeting - Friday, May 31st in my classroom (invite some friends - especially those going into 9th and 10th grade). Also - cross country camp will be from July 29-August 2.

Dart Track Update - BYU Invite Champs!!

Darts -
It's a little hard to believe that we are at the end of the season - with only the Region and State Championships to go. We have put in a lot of hard work, and we have seen a lot of progression over the past few months. I want to say how proud I am of this TEAM and of all that we have accomplished. I hope that as you each evaluate this season that you will not just think about how fast you ran, how many races you did or didn't win, and how many trophies our TEAM won, but I hope that you will consider the more important questions - did you give your best effort in workouts and races? Did you sacrifice for your teammates? Did you create lasting friendships? Were you committed to doing your very best and to making our TEAM the best it could be?
I hope that can be our focus over the final meets of the season - doing our best as individuals and as a TEAM. We have prepared ourselves to be champions at region and state - but I also want to see you all act like champions no matter what the outcome is. Give your very best efforts. Leave it all on the track or the field. Prepare for the meets the best that you can. And be a unified, excited TEAM.

BYU Invitational - For only the 2nd time in the past 15 years we were the BYU Invitational Champions for both the girls and the boys this past weekend. It is one of the hardest meets to win each year because it is a combination of the very best from 3A, 4A, and 5A. Points are not easy to come by at the BYU Invite. The boys won for the 6th year in a row, but it was not an easy victory - we ended up with 70 points to win by 20 over 2nd place Alta. There will definitely be teams coming after us at the state meet in two weeks - and we are going to have to fight hard for every point. After losing by 1 point a year ago, the girls came back this year and dominated the competition. We ended with 78 points and Bingham and Cedar tied for 2nd with 44. I was impressed with the fight and the determination I saw on both sides - and I think we are going to need to show even more and be even tougher when it comes to the state meet in 2 weeks.
We had some amazing individual performances, including 2 school records - Shea Martinez won the 800m in 2:08.45 (a new school and state record), and Trevor Leavitt won the 400m in 47.96 - a new school record and the top time in the state this year. Our other top performances include - Marcus Daley with 6'05 in the high jump; Jordan Schraedel and Andrew Tyndall both cleared 13'06 in the pole vault; Ben Bracken and Sam Matina both placed in the shot put, and Ben also placed 3rd in the discus; Jeff Whittaker finished 4th in the javelin; Jessica Richardson and Kaylee Brown both placed in the discus, and Jessica was also 6th in the shot put; Kendall Sargent finished 10th in the javelin; Seth Fortin was 4th in the 100m dash; Jackson Sagers and Seth Thompson both ran season bests of 1:55 and finished 7th-8th in the 800m; Skylar Williams was 11th in the 1600m; Bailey Carling was 4th in the 100m and 5th in the 200m with a new pr of 25.73; Taylor Cox was 4th in the 800m with Davis #2 all time 2:14.15; Hannah Albrechtsen and Joanna Boyd qualified for state in the 800m; Ellie Child finished 4th in the 3200 with a Davis #3 all-time 10:54; Christine Van Brocklin had another awesome day in the hurdles with 4th place in the 100 hurdles and 3rd in the 300 hurdles; Libby Fowler had a great pr of 15.31 and finished a strong 7th in the 100m hurdles; our boys 4 x 100m relay finished 3rd; our girls 4 x 100m finished 4th, our girls medley relay was also 4th, and our girls 4 x 400m relay finished 1st  with a state best 3:58. Region Championships - Wednesday & Thursday May 8-9 at Syracuse High School. I have attached a schedule of events with the names of those who are most likely to qualify for the events. This schedule is not final - but any adjustments need to be made tomorrow at practice. Please let me know if you see anything that may be wrong. The asterisk (*) means that those athletes might get to compete in those events. We will not know for certain until after the region meeting on Monday night, and I will handout a final schedule on Tuesday.
We would like the entire TEAM to come and support, even if you are not competing at the meet. You will be excused at 1:30 each day, and the buses will leave at 1:45. We would especially like everyone to stay until the end of the track meet on Thursday to be there for the awards presentation (at about 6:45).

Region Dinner - We are going to try something new this year. We would like to have a TEAM dinner on Tuesday night at 6:00pm at the school in the cafeteria (if it's available). We are going to need a lot of help to prepare food for about 225 athletes. I am asking for parent volunteers to bring spaghetti, spaghetti sauce, salad, and breadsticks. The coaches will bring the drinks and the dessert. We will have a sign up list at practice on Monday - or parents who would really like to get involved and help serve and bring a lot of food can email me and let me know what you can do.

Sophomore Region - Tuesday, May 14th. It looks like sophomore region is going to be at Davis High School. I will know for sure after the meeting tomorrow. I will get you more details when I know them. The sophomore region meet is for all sophomores and also for any juniors and seniors who do not qualify for the region championships. It will be a great opportunity to go for one last pr of the season.

State Championships - Friday & Saturday, May 17-18 @ BYU. I will have more details for the state championships (including a schedule) after the region meet.

Let's finish strong with no regrets over the final 2 weeks of the season!!
Thanks
Coach Talley
