Track Update - Super Meet Champs

Darts -
Our first real meet of 2011 was a huge success. Not only did we perform a little better than we were expecting, but we also put on a quality track meet. The boys did a great job officiating and helping with the girls day, and the girls did an equally good job on Wednesday as the boys competed. Thanks to all of you who helped with a positive attitude and stepped in to keep the meet going smoothly. Thanks to our volunteers and coaches as well for their work.
On Tuesday, the girls won with a dominating performance. We scored in all but 1 event to end the meet with 185 points. Over 100 points ahead of 2nd place Riverton. The 4 x 100m and the 4 x 400m both qualified for state on their first try. Sylvia Harrison and Adelyn Jones qualified for state in the 100m hurdles, and Sylvia also qualified in the 200m dash. Shea Martinez set a meet record of 2:15.94 and also qualified for state. We had a lot of marks that were close to state qualifying and a lot of season and lifetime bests as well. Most importantly, we won as a TEAM. It was a full effort - sprints, hurdles, distance races, relays, throwing events, and jumping events. Way to go Lady Darts!!! - for full results check http://darttrack.blogspot.com/2011/03/davis-super-meet-girls-results.html
On Wednesday, the boys set the tone for what looks to be a great season. We had some of our toughest state competition at the meet with Syracuse and Riverton. The boys also scored in all but 1 event, and ended the meet with 234.5 points. It is the most the boys have scored in the past 8 years. Riverton beat Syracuse by 1 point for the second place trophy (113 to 112). Our 4 x 100 team qualified for state, and in our first try of the season, we ran faster than we did all last year. Ethan Hunsaker also qualified for state in the pole vault. Houston Merrill and Spencer Betker qualified for state in the javelin (and were nearly joined by sophomore Jacob Ferrell in his first meet). Tyson Bullock qualified for state in the long jump. Landon Hart qualified in the 200m dash. The results are full of season and lifetime bests for us. It is a great starting point to the season. We need to stay humble and hungry. You can find results at http://darttrack.blogspot.com/2011/03/davis-super-meet-boys-results.html
Our hard work during the off season and the indoor season looks to have paid off - now we have 8 more weeks of hard work and focus and TEAM work until we get to the state meet. All of you need to continue to take things one workout and one meet at a time. We need little improvements and daily victories over doubt to get to where we want to be. I will continually remind you to take care of yourselves. Get plenty of rest. Eat good food. Stay hydrated throughout the day. Prepare mentally and physically for practices so that you are always prepared for races. Continue to make the sacrifices that will make our TEAM great.
There are also Super Meet pictures on facebook on my account - I don't believe you have to be my friend to check out the pictures. I will also be posting some on the Davis Track & Field Facebook page - you should all "like" that page.

We have another big week coming up before spring break:
1 - District Championships @ Syracuse High on Tuesday & Wednesday (March 29-30) Both days the meet will begin at 3:00pm. I have attached a schedule with our entries to this email. Please let me know if you see any errors. Once again - it is a state qualifying meet and the marks at this meet can get you into the state meet and the region meet. We will be discussing a few important items at practice on Monday so make sure that you are there. You will all be excused at 1:20 on Tuesday for the track meet - and those not in the class will be excused at 1:20 on Wednesday as well. We would like to bring home 2 District Championships after the 2 days. Be prepared!
2 - The UVU Invitational is on Saturday, April 2nd - The meet will begin at 8:00am which means we have to leave the school pretty early. We will be announcing who is competing and we will be passing out information about the meet this week. Please let us know if you are going to be out of town for this one. We only have 5 entries per event. I am hoping that enough of you are going to be here that we can go down and get a win against some of our Utah County competition.
3 - Spring Break - We will hold practice on Mon-Tues-Wed of Spring Break. We will meet each day at 9:00am (distance runners meet at 8:00am). They are mandatory practices if you are not out of town. We will type up some workout ideas for those of you who will be on vacation.
4 - TEAM t-shirts - If any of you would like to order a t-shirt, please sign up on the clipboard at practice on Monday. If any parents would like a Davis Track & Field shirt - send me an email and I will add you to the list. The cost of the shirts is $8 each.

Thanks for everything - Keep up the great work,
Coach Talley
